Visitors will find 5 star boutique and lodge accommodation, international quality hotels and motels in most city centres and towns. There is a wide range of backpackers accommodation around the country, including a network of Youth Hostels that are members of the Youth Hostels Association and a network of Nomads Hostels. Free camping is also available in many places. Unless there is a "no camping" sign it is common to find a tent or hammock pitched for the night in many picnic areas or in a grove of trees off the road. For unique New Zealand accommodation, there are Māori homestays and tourist-catering marae stays.

New Zealand has a vibrant and varied nightlife, with a range of nightlife activities to suit everyone. Nightlife in New Zealand includes bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants and gentlemen's bars. Lively entertainment precincts such as Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour and Britomart and Wellington’s Courtenay Place offer a variety of music scenes and live entertainment so there’s something to suit everyone from pub-goers and night clubbers to those seeking cosy bars. Also, you may want to try your luck at one of New Zealand’s casinos where you’ll also find live music, dancing, dining and bars, or visit a theatre or comedy club.

English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language are the official languages of New Zealand. English is universal and is officially written with British spelling. New Zealand English is one of the major varieties of English and differs from other forms.
